Noise-expansion cascade: an origin of randomness of turbulence
Published in Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2025
Through a thought experiment via several clean numerical experiments based on the Navier-Stokes equations for two-dimensional turbulent Kolmogorov flow, this paper reveals the “noise-expansion cascade” whereby all micro-level noises at different orders of magnitude gradually expand to macroscopic scales, uncovering an origin of turbulence randomness.
